Cosgrove Hill residents, head to the Durham Farmers’ Market on January 8th at 10:00 a.m. Why? Because you will find many vendors offering locally grown foods including, home-baked pies, honey, vegetables, fruits, handmade chocolates, local wine, and even eggs! In addition to food, you can purchase potted plants, hand-made soaps, artwork, pottery, and jewelry.  Every item is produced locally-no more than 70 miles away!  Why shop at your local Durham Farmers’ Market? The Durham Farmers’ Market offers fun for everyone at every age. Do you have a child that aspires to be a chef? Is your child interested in learning more about local food?  If so, the Durham Home Fries Cookin’ Team may be just the right activity.  The team consists of kids, ranging from 9-13 years of age, who have an interest in learning how to cook with local food. The team meets every 3rd Saturday of each month under the big tent on the central market lawn. Kids have fun learning basic cooking procedures, and how to shop for fresh, local ingredients. In addition, classes are taught by local chefs. You can sign your child up for the 2011 season of the Durham Home Fries Cookin’ Team in April.

A well-balanced pet gets is happy. A happy pet gets plenty of exercise. If you own an apartment dog, big or small, it is important that the dog gets the required exercise they need. When our pets become restless, that is when they resort to chewing of our furniture and behavioral problems (i.e. constant barking). Dogs need to expend their energy and sometimes walking on a leash doesn’t cut it. They need to run! At Cosgrove Hill, our pet-friendly community wants our four legged friends to be happy as well! Our community provides a spacious fenced-in dog park for dogs that need to get out that energy. But, there are other ways to exercise your dog!

Hiking – Hiking with your dog can be a bonding experience while getting exercise!

Running – Another great way to work in fitness for you and your dog. Start out slow for 5 minutes then increase speed.

Biking – Biking can be a leisurely exercise. You can purchase the appropriate tethers for biking.

Retrieving – The most well known exercise to dogs! This can give your dog plenty of bonding and running time.

There are so many different things to do with your dog. You can also provide safe, and gently play in your apartment when the weather is not behaving. Also, check into local doggie day camps around your area that provide safe play all day while you’re at work!

Stone Temple Pilots Rocks Raleigh Oct. 19th!

From the twisted mind of Scott Weiland came forth albums such as ‘Purple’, ‘Core’ and ‘Tiny Music…Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop’ that defined a generation of music. Other influential bands such as Nirvana, AIC, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam all did the same, but Stone Temple Pilots, with psychedelic front man Weiland, made their own waves with acid washed songs of 90′s alternative.

With ‘Core’ a streamline of hits like ‘Sex Type Thing’, Creep’, and “Wicked Garden’ defined their sound with Weiland’s voice and guitars. With  ’Purple’, Pilots kept up the hype with the success of ‘Big Empty’ also included on ‘The Crow’ soundtrack. Following with that, ‘Tiny Music…’ also kept with the traditional sound of Weiland’s raspy voice with amped guitar sounds.

Stone Temple Pilots, amidst much controversy and problems surrounding Weiland, has always remained a main staple to the alternative genre. They’ve managed to survive as a band (even during Weiland’s other project, Velvet Revolver), and continue with touring.

Stone Temple Pilots will be at the Raleigh Amphitheater on Tuesday, October 19th! Cosgrove Hill Apartments are just a 40 min. drive from the Raleigh Amphitheater off S. Salisbury Street! Tickets can be purchased at the Livenation site!

Cirque de la Symphonie comes to Meymandi Concert Hall

The circus is coming! Well, the circus and symphony! It’s actually a great mash-up of orchestra music with precise movements that denote great meticulous care to the art of acrobatics. Very much unlike traditional circus acts with goofy clown antics with animals typically found on other continents, the Cirque de la Symphonie delves into the beauty of symphony music and energized movements of cirque artists!

Cirque de la Symphonie has seasoned performers trained in their discipline of aerial flying, contortionists, dancers, jugglers and strongmen. The movements are orchestrated to classical masterpieces and popular contemporary music.

Coming to Meymandi Concert Hall Oct. 1st, 2nd & 3rd, the Cirque de la Symphonie will amaze, thrill and excite the audience with their new performances! Tickets can be purchased at the Ticketmaster site. On Tuesday, Sept 28th, you can purchase two tickets for the price of one!

Science of Beer, Sept. 16th Museum of Life & Science

The Science of Beer, Museum of Science and Life — Sept. 16th, 7-9 p.m.

Beer — that magic concoction of hops and barley — is probably the most consumed alcoholic beverage in the world. Dating back as far as 9000 B.C. and found in almost every culture, it’s no wonder that Beer fascinates, along with tantalizing our taste buds, and celebrated with festivals and events highlighting the most consumed beverage.

The Museum of Life and Science, located in Durham, NC, is discovering the Science of Beer. Local breweries and home brew enthusiasts will be sharing in all that is beer. Visitors will be able to sample, discuss, and consort with other beer enthusiasts while other exhibits — the outdoor garden and Magic Wings Butterfly House* — can also be explored.

Can’t find a babysitter? Children are also welcome! The Science of Root Beer is the exhibit for kids whose parents are attending the Science of Beer. They will explore the mixing and measuring of chemistry while brewing home-made root beer and even spend some time with the “residents” of the Bayer CropScience Insectarium in Magic Wings Butterfly House.

Preregistration for the events are required! Program for kids is for the attendees of the Science of Beer. Kids are $10 to enter, and adults get in for $15, $12 for members. To pre-register, please call 919-220-5429×313.

The Woofstock Experience 2010 in Durham

It’s a day going to the dogs! The Woofstock Experience 2010 welcomes out dog lovers and patrons of Durham!

Visitors will find information about basic pet care, training and agility. Live music from The Trosa Band and Andy Coats & The Bank Walkers will be there to entertain guest of the human variety. Vendors will be on hand with food, dog products and chances to donate to local shelters and rescues. Find canine demonstrations from Flyball by Doggonefast Flyball Club, Agility by Sunny Acres Pet Training, and City of Durham K9 Officer and check out some of the local rescue groups.

The Woofstock Experience 2010 will be held on Sunday, September 26th in Durham Central Park. Cosgrove Hill residents are just 20 mins. from Durham Central Park. Your dog will love you for it!

With autumn approaching quickly, it’s a opportunity to get out and explore your environment. It’s also a great time to learn about your camera. Yes, that device that takes pictures but you don’t really understand the mechanics behind photography.

Photography has since been considered a media used primarily by professionals. But with the progression of digital cameras, almost anyone can try their eye at photography. And with Adobe Photoshop, its easier to clean up and enhance pictures that turned out less than favorable. If you want to discover the magic media, why not start with photography classes at The ArtsCenter?

I’m actually highly impressed with the classes offered for photography. The fundamentals of photography (e.g. working with film or digital, light and camera techniques, composition) are excellent for basic understanding. Classes in HDR (high dynamic range give so much to your pictures), black & white photography, and advanced techniques (e.g. ring flash, flash, natural light) make your pictures gallery quality.

The ArtsCenter offers classes in photography for a really low price of $43, and members can attend classes for $39. For what you pay, you’re getting a Fine Arts education without the alma mater.  For class descriptions and dates, visit The ArtsCenter site to locate more information.
